2006.280.1.1Description
"3131 St. Charles and Grand Centrel [sic] Hotels, L.A.," attributed to Payne, Stanton and Company, ca. 1882. The view is of the east side of Main Street and shows, from left to right, the Arcadia Block, the Grand Central Hotel, the Pico Building (with the "Bank of Los Angeles sign at the peak of the facade), and the St. Charles Hotel. There are some pedestrians, horse-drawn conveyances, storefront signs, and other noteworthy details. On the reverse is a stamp for "Hellman, Stassforth & Co." bookstore and stationery dealers, who originally sold this view. The Pico Building was formerly home of the bank of Hellman, Temple and Company and was built by Pio Pico in 1868. With a white liquid at the lower right of the right image and some soiling on the photo and mount, the general condition is good overall.Lexicon
