Description

A stereoscopic photograph "8306. California's Great Orange, State Building, Columbian Exposition," Benjamin W. Kilburn, 1893. The elevated view, from a second-floor walk in the cavernous hall looks down upon the exhibit with a banner reading "This Fruit Was / Grown in Southern California / The Land of Sunshine and Flowers" over a tiered display of what appears to be preserved fruit in large glass jars. A gazebo with a cylindrical roof, a display of a large orange and base made of oranges, what appears to be a stuffed grizzly bear and other elements compose the exhibit. In the distance behind another elevated walkway is a banner reading "California." The exposition commemorated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' voyage to the Americas, was held in Chicago from 1 May to 30 October. With a stain on the reverse, minor soiling and moderate abrasion and fading, the condition is good to fair.
