Description

"Hutchings' California Magazine," January 1861 (Vol. 5, No. 7.) The publication has material on a bird found in the state; a proposed Revolutionary War soldiers' monument; a San Francisco private library; a water flume in Stanislaus County; a Christmas story; a piece on geysers by Thomas Starr King; an oration before the Society of California Pioneers from the previous September covering Spanish and Mexican California; and a continued series on trapper Peg-Leg Smith, which mentions John Rowland as part of a trapping expedition from early 1826. There are also poems, more fiction, a "social chair"; an "editor's table"; and literary notices. As disbound, with some staining, soiling, creases, and rubbing, the condition is fair.
