"IN AND OUT OF THE OLD MISSIONS OF CALIFORNIA" Color: Gold; Green "In and Out of the Old Mission of California: An Historical and Pictorial Account of the Franciscan Missions," by George Wharton James (Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1918), 392 pp. The book has a green hardcover with an illustration of a mission, title, and author's name at the top of the front in gold. The title, author's name, and publisher's name are also on the spine in gold. A white label with the name of a former owner is on the inside of the front cover. At the beginning of the inside are a title page, dedication, table of contents, list of illustrations, and a foreword. The book has 37 chapters with the first five covering the founding of the missions to their secularization. All of California's missions are individually covered in the following twenty-one chapters. Following are chapters on the mission chapels; natives; architectural features; silver and brass ware; saints; funds; El Camino Real; preservation; and directions to reach the missions. There are also 142 photographs. The object is in good overall condition with some abrasions; dented corners; some soiling; light fading of the gold lettering; and small tears on the cover fabric.
