Description

Color: Brown A stereoview or sterograph called "Spring Street, Los Angeles, Cal., U.S. A.," by B. L. Singley, 1897. The photographic image shows a busy street scene at an unidentified intersection with pedestrians on a sidewalk, horse-drawn vehicles and a streetcar on the paved thoroughfare and a maze of electric wires and cables criscrossing above street level in all directions. On a wooden pole in the foreground is a black sign indicating streetcar tickets for Santa Monica, Pasadena, and Altadena may be purchased nearby. There is also a street banner along the sidewalk for "Desmond's," a clothier. The streetcar's destinations were the Baker Block on the north and the Southern Pacific Railroad depot on the south. The front also has an advertising banner for the Los Angeles Fiesta on it. A few other partially visible street signs indicate a dentist, doctor, hotel, bakery, and cigar shop and a banner over the street in the background advertises a music store. Rows of pennants hanging from wire along the sidewalks may be decorations for the Fiesta. On the reverse is the number "97" in parentheses and a description of Los Angeles: "Los Angeles is situated 9 miles from the Pacific coast and was first settled by the Spaniards in 1790 [sic]. The subject of this view is the principal business thoroughfare of the city." The identification number for the image is "4314." With corner dents, some surface soiling, and a black mark, perhaps ink between the two images, the item is in good overall condition.
