Color: Gold; Green "Death Valley in '49," by William Lewis Manly (New York: Wallace Hebberd, 1929), 524 pp. The green hardcover book has the title in gold at the top of the front and the author's name at the bottom, also in gold. Both of the latter, and the name of the publisher, are on the spine in gold. The flysheets at the front and back both have black and white drawings of maps that show the route followed by Manly from Mineral Point, Minnesota to Los Angeles in 1849. A title page, table of contents, a list of illustrations, and a foreword by John Steven McGroarty follow. Included in the book are Manly's accounts of his early life, being lost and trapped in Death Valley, descriptions of California, and a meeting with John Rowland in 1852 on page 381. Manly describes Rowland's personality, ranch, workers, and early life. A mention of William Workman is made on page 382. The artifact is in good condtion with some abrasions; slightly dented corners; some soiling; browning of the pages; some fading of the gold lettering; small stains on the cover; small tears on the cover fabric; and some overall wear.
