Description

Color: Brown "Paine Miracle Doors," a catalog issued by the Paine Lumber Company, 1924. The artifact has a softcover with a faux leather finish in a dark brown color. An embossed border forms a square panel, within which is the publication title at the top in gold letters fringed in black. Below this is the company logo, consisting of a floral border, a green background, and the letter "P" in script on the background in gold. The Miracle door is essentially a multi-panel door, with some panels in one wood and others of other types of wood. Pages 3-10 consist of what amounts to an essay about the features and quality of the door, accompanied by engravings of examples. From page 12 are product listings giving information on the door, including types of wood and finish, as well as finish details on the walls and floors around it, on one page. On the facing page, a color illustration showing the door installed with part of the papered wall, baseboard and crown moldings of a hallway or room for context. Each description and illustration page has a floral border around it and the description pages show silhouette-like images of apartment buildings, hotels, dormitories and other buildings throughout the country which utilize Paine doors. At the back are pages showing cross-sections of doors to illustrate construction, with color images pointing out features. Charts for glass sizes and layouts, ordering information, finish and graining information, standard door sizes and company information are at the back. In fair condition, the binding is loose at the front and middle, there is a stain at the upper left of the front cover and there are creases on some pages and the cover.
