Description

Photo from newspaper "Snapshot of Island History". An old picture of Oak Harbor's pioneering Riepma family is provided by Anna Balda Spafford. Anna, a 1939 graduate of Coupeville High School, married Bud Spafford in 1948. Her mother was a Riepma. Today the Spaffords reside at Regency of Whidbey. The Riepma family left Harrison, S.D. in mid-December 1902 by train with eight children. All their possessions were stored in wooden barrels. From Seattle they went by boat on the Fairhaven to Oak Harbor, arriving Dec. 22. They were met by Reinder Eerkes and were guests of his family for two nights before settling in San de Fuca. They were among the first Dutch settlers. There were two Zylstra and two Eerkes families, plus Boerhave and Balda families when the Riepmas arrived. This Riepma family photograph was taken in 1914 in Bellingham, a day's journey away. Front row: l-r Maggie Riepma Balda, age 28, Frank Riepma, 60, Harry Riepma, 6; Annie Riepma Wesseling, 50; and Jacob B. Riepma, 22. Back: Helen Riepma, 14; John Riepma, 30; Jennie Riepma (married Wesley Morrison), 20; Grace Riepma (married John Mesman), 14; Frank Riepma, 18; Dora Riepma (married Geert Zylstra), 14; and Ann Riepma (married James N. Emory), 16
