Scope and Content

A photocopy of a letter addressed to Mr. George Kellogg of Seattle, Washington, from Jacob Anthes in 1930. The note on page 2 states it was evidently in response for information on Langley and South Whidbey history for Kellogg's Masters Thesis. The original is in the Northwest Collection of the University of Washington Library. The letter contains information on Whidbey and Langley from Jacob's first visit in 1880. He met all the settlers, describes logging camps, and names them. He bought land in 1881. Discusses events: 1890-1891 Great Northern railway building along the coast precipitated him to interest Seattle Judge J.W. Langley of Seattle to help form the Langley Land and Improvement Company - result was establishment of Langley town. Built store, was postmaster in 1891. School built. Steamers.
