An article from the Everett Herald entitled "New plan to preserve prairie; Parks may buy Whidbey land" by Carol Byng. The article talks about a new plan that would involve the National Park Service buying the 300-acre Smith farm, rather than buying development rights. "Neither the owners nor their opponents belive the Park Service will be able to come up with the money in time". When the article was written, the plan was preliminary and the owners of the Smith farm were waiting for the "state Court of Appeals to decide whether the owners can continue developing and selling their land".
