A black and white postcard of two men standing on railroad tracks with a tripod and surveying equitment set up. There are a few inches of snow on the ground. The men are wearing suits and hats. One of them has a coat on as well. The man on the right has an axe in his hand. The bottom of the photo says, "Verne Elder". There is writing on the back of the postcard. Anna Bancroft Kellogg's husband. Went by Verner, but George Verner Elder. He worked as an engineer for the City of Anacortes. 1910 Bellingham census shows he was a railroad engineer.
