Photo of Bessie Jane Wallace was born on July 14, 1849, in Oregon City to Ruthlinda & William Wallace. She came to Whidbey Island with her parents and half-brother in 1851. They made their home at Cresent Harbor on the Wallace Donation Claim. When Bessie was sixteen, she married John A. Cornelius. Their first son, William John Cornelius, was born on the island. They moved to the flats to raise their family near La Conner. A total of 4 children were born to Bessie. She was widowed in 1880 and in 1882 Bessie married J. O. Rudene. She was widowed again in 1930. Bessie died in 1934. She claimed to be the first white woman to live in Skagit County. Photo submitted by her great-great granddaughter, Mrs. Hugh N. Barnes.
