Photograph of canoe races held in Penn Cove, 1933.
Typewritten note pasted on the reverse of the photo reads, "Northwest Redmen* Hold War Canoe Race: Eighteen Indian war canoes, each manned by eleven red-skinned* oarsmen, competed in the annual water festival for the [illegible] War Canoe Championship XX of America at Coupeville, Wash. Each craft, 50 feet long or more, is a racing replica of the war canoes used by earlier generations of red skins*. This photo shows the boats racing along during the final heat. The event was won by the Question Mark, entry of the Nooksack Indian tribe, which covered the slightly more than three-mile course in twenty minutes, repeating its victory of last year. The race is held in Penn's Cove, Puget Sound, off Widby Island. Credit Line (ACME) 8/16/33."
* Archival note: It is crucial to note that the terms 'redmen, red-skinned, and red skins' are culturally contested terminology; outdated, insensitive, and racially/culturally offensive. These terms should not be used in present day.Photograph Details
