Dorothy Neil's Scrapbook 1959-61

I am including this note to give everyone a little more insight as to what is included in the scrapbook.
Written on the cover is "Editor WNT." The WNT stands for Whidbey News TImes.
FIrst page includs a photo of Dorothy and Phyllis Smith. Phyllis also worked for the newspaper.
Doroty published a monthly news letter called the Spindrift. She shared a lot of Oak Harbor history with her readers. She was a wonderful writer.
Dorothy published nine books, all about local history. Her only problem was she didn'tspend time reseaching or editing and did not like to be told she was wrong.
Ray Ellis was the mayor of Oak Harbor when the cement car was christened in 1965. Ellis was also a veterinarian. The photo of the guy in jail was an Oak Harbor fund raiser for non-profit organizations. They would put a well known citizen in jail and family or friends had to pay to get him or her out.
Oak Harbor and Coupeville both had plays sheds. They came before gyms. They were used for everything. The shed in ocupeville was heated by a wood stove in each end. It was removed in 1943 when the new school was built.

Mr. Bert Arnold and her husband had five chicken houses, egg layers in Coupeville. The farm is where the Terry Mobile HOme Park is now on Terry Rd.
Ralph Engle was one od the sons of the pioneer William Engle. Living and farming near Coupeville, he recorded the local weather for decades.
Scoop Jackson did a lot for Washington. Two of hs local projects he obtained fuding for the historical 10 inch guys at FOrt Casey and in 19 78 helped form the Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve.
