Description

Ft Casey, Mortar Pit. All original mortars were Model M189 MI mounted on Model M1896 MI carriages. Battery construction (Seymour and Schenck) commenced 1898, date of transfer for both June 16, 1902. In the background is the data/telephone booth. This received firing data from the ploting room, posted on boards and slide the boards outside (right side of booth) so the mortar crews could determine shell weight, powder weight and zone needed to load the mortars. Mortares #1&2 (front) were fired at different angles than mortars #3&4 (back) in order to avoid contatc at the apex firing angle. The camera while pointing down was facing an eastern direction.
