Photograph of Mary Ella Smith (right) at the Davis Blockhouse, c. 1946. Two small newspaper clippings on the reverse of the photo read, "The Davis Blockhouse is one of four remaining on Whidbey Island in modern times. It and the others were built in the 1850's, the period of troubles between Indians and whites, including the murder of Isaac N. Ebey. The Ebey farm was near the Davis property."
Clipping #2: "Mary Ella Smith visits Davis blockhouse in Sunnyside Cemetery, where her grandmother played as a child. Four blockhouses still stand in or near Coupeville. The one most visited was erected by John Alexander on his farm and later moved to a site adjoining the hotel on the town's main street."Photograph Details
