Photo: "James Stephen Maddox was the youngest son of Wm & Rebecca Maddox. Born in Illinois 1851, died Skagit County poor farm 1932. Stephen was a small child when he arrived on Whidbey Is. with his mother, brothers and sister. His mother was known as "the widow Maddox" until she married Levi Ford. Stephen had red hair, the first white child the Indigenous Peoples had ever seen with hair that color. James Stephen married (1880) Lucinda Osgoodby in Mt. Vernon."
