Back of the photo reads: "In congregation, in the choir and at the alter, Indigenous Peoples and whites-men, women and children-joined yesterdayin an outdoor mass as they did a century ago on Whidbey Island (then Cross Island). The Rev. J.E. O'Brien (center), pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, of Coupeville, is shown as he celebrated mass and delivered a sermon. The mass, held just outside John Alexander's old blockhouse, was attended by decendents of the pioneers, who stood near a century-old cedar cross. The rededicationof the cross was a part of Coupeville's tenth annual Indian Water Festival and Canoe Race. August 14 1939."Collection
