Bedstead of frame and panel construction, of eastern white pine grained to look like maple, and painted. Footboard has rounded ends, serpentine crest rail. Headboard has shaped end posts with molded edges and serpentine crest rail. Entire surface painted in yellow ochred tones in imitation of figured maple. Over graining are painted small landscape scenes and decorative borders in red and brown. Part of a bedroom suite with dresser and table. Replacement side rails are plywood painted to match head and footboards; cottage furniture - Renaissance Revival with Rococo influences.
From MOHAI Catalog Card: Pine hand painted bedstead. Brought around the Horn in the early 1850s by Captain Coupe founder of Coupeville, Whidbey Island. Pumpkin pine - so called for its golden color. Bed is about 3/4 size. All surface painted in wavy lines with small pastoral scene on headboard. Footboard curved at ends and also painted with scenes.Lexicon
