Description

Photo of a small wood building built on wood pilings on a rocky shore. Trees are behind the building. A bluff is visible in the distance. From the old accession book: Photo with description:. Background on Wilson Mill (Located across from Kennedy's Lagoon near San de Fuca); Fred Mison's Mill (brother of Mrs. James Henry Swift). Hudson's Bay Warehouse - Kennedy's Lagoon. From the old entry: James Busby's claim was recorded in 1853. His son, Wilson Busby started a grist mill near the Barstow Trading Post. The Busby Mill machinery was taken on a scow to Seattle in 1876 and used in the Yesler Mill. The warehouse for the Busby Mill was torn down in 1877 and lumber was used in building the storehouse for the new grist mill that had been built (near the present Kennedy's Lagoon between Coupeville and San de Fuca.) by FRIEND WILSON, a brother of Mrs. James Henry Swift. Friend Wilson built the mill for his brother, Edson J. Wilson, a banker in Valleyjo, California. The mill was later operated under the direction of Captain James Henry Swift. The power was furnished by the tides advancing and retreating. The machinery was mostly made of wood. Horace Holbrook of Coupeville learned his trade as a machinist and wood worker from Friend Wilson, who had also installed machinery for Capt. Roeder of Whatcom. This mill was finally sold to Dr. Williston of Pt. Townsend & was moved by scow to San Juan Island. The mill stones are presently at Argyll near Friday Harbor. This build (empty pictured) was on this site until the 1940's when the underpinning washed away. It fell down. From the folder: Kennedy's Lagoon
