The Tillicum - A Tip Over Canoe
Two-Man canoe made by Aleck Kettle in 1933. It was manned by Elson "Ikey" Alick and Bud Smith in the International Races. These canoes were paddled a short distance along the course, stopping as the competitor approached; then the paddlers stood, each holding a long pole that was padded on the end. The object was to push your competitor out of the canoe and tip it over. After a tip-over these Indigenous boys were able to right their canoe, empty out the water, climb in and continue the race.Collection
