The ELSON - One Man Hurdle Canoe
This canoe was made by Aleck Kettle for his youngest grandson Elson. It was entered in the International Races in 1934. The canoe was paddled up to a greased log which had been anchored along the race course. Now, speed and timing had to be perfect, for just as the canoe bow reached the log the paddler threw his weight backwards, lifting his canoe bow high enough to top the log. Then with a powerful stroke of his paddle he threw his weight forward, to slide over the log. He had to keep the canoe pright and get to the finish line first in order to win.Collection
