Canoe, War Canoe 1850's oldest in State, made by Sam Wick for Chief Snakelum. Believe this is actually a family canoe not a war canoe.
The following was written on a separate sheet about "Canoes at Alexander Blockhouse, Coupeville, Washington" - there is no author:
On top is a War Canoe - believed to the the oldest dugout in the State of Washington. It was made by Sam Wick in the early 1850s. First used by Snetlum, Chief of the Skagit Tribe, to which Sam Wick belonged. The first Chief Snetlum died Dec. 16, 1852. His son Charlie became Chief (known as Big Charlie) died June 5, 1857. His son George became Chief - died - 1880. Charlie Snetlum Jr. (called Long Charlie) was the last Chief. He died in 1934. All are buried in a private cemetery near Snakelum Point. Above names and dates were taken from records kept by Capt. Robert C. Fay, Indian Agent 1850-1861. (In later years the spelling of the name and point was Snakelum.Collection
