Photo of the interior of a store. This is the inside of the store at 8 NW Front Street - from the photos this is the Whidbey Mercantile or A. B. Coates and Co. of 1904. A set of tables are in the central aisle. The tables and counters and shelves on each side have a variety of food, paper, scales, bottled items and other items for sale. A man is standing behind the counter on the right. On the back: Whidbey Mercantile (now Toby's Tavern). Built by Robertson - run later by Coates. Elva Hellegrave behind counter.

Per PNRO page 160: built for John Robertson c. 1875, sold to Thomas Calhoun in 1890. By 1896 A. B. Coates and Co. had a store with storage in the east side until 1938. In the 1930s George Hesselgrave sold gasoline and rented a vehicle from the west side. Since the 1930s it has been a tavern.
