From old AT 1251 entry:
James Place/Winkes House c. 1870 located at 26 South Terry Road, Coupeville. Vernacular Farmhouse. This farmhouse may have been built in the 1870's, as evidenced by newspapers found in the walls by the present owner. N.H. James owned the house, and in 1920 ran an ad in the local paper; "For sale: my 11 1/4 acre ranch on Ebeys Prairie in the big wheat belt and only one mile from county seat. Good house, barn, outbildings, and small orchard. Price about $4500." Sargent Wm. Nelson owned the house for 5-6 years. (c. 1940) and then exchanged property with Edwin Sherman who sold to Dan Smith in 1968, who eventually sold to Winkes in 1971. The James Place has been extensively altered over the years:the 2-story bay window on the south facade was removed c. 1960's and a new one added to the east facade in 1980; a 2nd story was added to extend the main house; an addition on the 1st floor built c. 1930's; shed roof addition built in the late 1940's. This is a non contributing structure.Made/Created
