Description

Portrait of Grandma Holbrook wife of Captain Holbrook, seated reading a newspaper. Grandma Holbrook, wife of Capt. Holbrook, formerly Mrs. Sylvester of Olympia (a founder). Mother of R. B., Horace, "Molly". Came to Wash. Terr. on Capt. Swift's ship "Anadyr" in 1855 or '57 from California. He loaded Spars(sic) at Utsalady for Navy Burt(sic) France in "55 and for Falmouth Engl. (English Navy) in "57. She took the boat "Fairy" to Olympia. This was one of the 1st little paddle boats on Puget Sound and could navigate shallow waters. She said it was on the mud flats most of the trip. It was a little paddle-wheeler. She was invalided at last in a wheelchair with a broken hip. 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 negative of photo (91-7-96-11B) in the folder.
