Side view of Robert Hill house built in 1865, photo taken in 1971. From AT 1302 entry: Robert Crosby Hill House, circa 1865. Vernacular Farmhouse. Robert Crosby Hill came to Whidbey Island in 1853, in search of work, and took a Donation Land claim, eventually building this house. In 1883, Hill sold his farm to E.H.S. Spangler. Wilbur Sherman bought the property from the heirs of Joe Arnold in 1938, and had carpenter Fred Krueger build an addition on the west facade in 1949. Only 3 original windows remain intact: the others were replaced in 1960 by Sherman. In 1979, Sherman sold the property to local farmer Robert Engle who continues to use the land surrounding the R.C. Hill House for agicultural purposes. Located at 1453 W. Hill Road, Coupeville. 1995: one contributing building, one contributing structure. This property if significant under National Register criterion A, for its association with early Euroamerican settlement in the Pacific Northwest and the Donation Land Claim Laws. This property is also significant under National Register criterion A for its association with agricultural land use patterns first established during the early settlement in the 1850's Blue Book 320 additional pictures
