John Crockett House/ Engle Farm. Front view of the house with Gretchen Thorn and Joanne Engle Brown standing in front of it (information was on back of photo) in between two stone gate pillars. Two trees are behind them partially blocking the house.
Vernacular Farmhouse. Wood frame set on stone and beam foundation; L-shape (32' x 24') with extensions; 3 bay wide 2 1/2 stories; clapboard siding; wood shake gable roof with small side gables on west, south facades; center entrance on north facade; corbelled and center interior end chimneys. Exterior features include 1/1, 6/1, 6/6 double-hung sash; single pane fixed sashl flat-roofed porch on north facade supported by simple narrow open post columns with molded capitals and bases; 4-panel door with hald sidelights and panels below.
John. M Crockett built this large farmhouse in 1858 on a 318 acre Donation Claim which he filed on March 6, 1866. After his death, his wife Ann remarried Dr. Joshua Highwarden. They resided here until they sold to Thomas W. Calhoun in February 1888. Calhoun remained until 1889 when he sold to Charles (Carl) Engle. Charles Engle built the gambrel-roofed barn adjacent to the house in 1909, as well as the milk barn, grainery and machine outbuildings. In 1916, Engle constructed the large stone gate posts using woven wire fencing. He also constructed the cement sewage trough running from the house into the field. A new roof was put on in 1950. The ownership moved Charles Engle to his daughters, and then to their brother Robert E. Engle who is the current owner. Robert re-roofed in 1980.
