Description

Academy Foundations/Judge Still Home, 1914, Main Street, Coupeville. The stone foundations under this house are all that was left when the first Academy burned down. It had been originally planned for a sanitarium on the site by Dr. highwarden who ran out of money before he could complete it. After the fire in 1896, the foundations sat on the vacant lot until the land was bought by Lester Still, a local lawyer who lare became Judge. His office was down on Main (Front) Street so he had no commute to speak of. Even so, he was the owner of the first car on the island, a Holzman, now in the museum collection. Still built this house in 1914. It has since passed through many owners.
