2024.RSC.481Description
Photograph showing the original fireplace inside the Davis Blockhouse. In 2007, logs within the blockhouse were replace and the fireplace and chimney collapsed due to the disturbance. The mortar was clay and the chimney was made of sticks and mud. A replacement false fireplace was built in 2007 using the original fieldstones.
This is the only known fireplace in a blockhouse in Central Whidbey as it was originally built as a log cabin.
A small newspaper clipping on the reverse of the photo states, "Fireplace in John Davis blockhouse. Mrs. Margaret Smith examines steps leading up beside stick and mud chimney to ledge where sentinels were posted at port holes. Mrs. Smith is descended from Chloe Terry, whose diary was basis of Archie Binns' "The Land Is Bright." C. 08 Sept. 1946.Photograph Details
