Description

Square linen trunk with leather corners and brass hasps. Owned by John Gould and carried around the Isthmus of Panama in 1849. He stopped at San Francisco during the Gold Rush, then staked a claim near Oak Harbor in 1850. He then went up to the Frazier River w/ Indigenous guides to look for claims but returned to Whidbey. First fam where Harry Smith lived, house built by Cockett. Built house now owned by Weedin on First St. and Gould. John Gould carried the trunk once over the Isthmus of Panama.
