Description

Photograph of the "Calista" steamer, named after Calista Lovejoy, c. August 1911. Built in the Martinolich Boatyard in Dockton, Vashon-Maury Island. The Calista was taken to Seattle and outfitted; its engine came from "Whidbey" ship which had burned. The Calista was in a collision accident when it was rammed by the "Hawaii Maru" off West Point, near Seattle. A note from Roger Sherman on the reverse of the photo states, "There is a question as to if this is really the "Calista" because of the placement of the windows in the crews' gunters and galley area." Another note from Roger Sherman states that credit for this photo goes to Vashon/Maury Heritage Association.
