Photograph of Abram Lansdale Alexander (left) and D.C. Smith holding a historic cross outside Alexander Blockhouse, now located within a protected interpretation shed next to the blockhouse.
The cross is said to have been found standing on the island by the first white settler in 1851, believed to have been erected by Russian priests. Another story tells that Father Blanchet erected it while preaching to the Indigenous peoples on the island in 1848.
Abram Lansdale Alexander was the son of John Alexander, Sr., who built the Alexander Blockhouse in 1855.Photograph Details
