SOMETHING ELSE AGAIN A great mixture o" talent - including three South Whidbey high school students' rousing opening num ber on the trumpet. Tummy Oxborrow's new friend, Rusty, was a big success. By Allee Elles Lots of comedy inter- spersed with vocals and dance. It's not too late to make a donation to the cys tic fibrosis fund. It goes to research to help Mark, Tubitha and Ryan of Whid bey. Roger Briggs put out the word at the senior center dinner theater that he would like a lot of people to audition for a coming play. All ages to make up townspeople. TIJ.is is your chance at fame, folks. Call the Whidbey Play house for dates and times. He and Shar on did a comedy routine at the dinner. The response was super and more such evenings are planned. We were all set to balk at some of the questions on the census form. No body's going to get that info from us, we vowed. Then when the short form appeared in the mailbox, we were de flated. Such innocuous questions. All our aggressiveness evaporated and our blood pressure dropped like a lead weight. Here we were primed for battle, and all we got was a spitwad. I got called "grandma" three times last week. Cute little tykes who identi fy all white-haired females as such. So this leads to something I heard on my one available television channel A minister's small grandson was sitting next to his grandmother when he no ticed her hands. They had large veins and wrinkles and were not smooth like his. "Grandma, what happened to your hands?" "Nothing happened. They are just old." Photos by Judy Van Deen Horses were her life Karen Parrish, holding a photograph of herself on a horse, remembers her days as a champion horse r ider. While she has taken a break from her horses, she hopes some day to return to her native land and her first love. "Grandma, how old are you?" "I'm 72, dear." There was a pause and then the child asked in awe, "Did you start with I?" Then there was another true story stranger than fiction that I read. Australian native' s hiatus from horses temporary A woman had a little red Volkswagen bug and parked it near a circus show. When she came out, she found the front had been crushed. An animal handler explained that the elephants had been trained to sit on red cans and when one saw that little red seat, he sat. But since the engine was in the rear and unharmed, she was able to go on her way. Driving down the highway she passed an accident but didn't slow down, just kept going. Soon she was stopped by a patrolman going to the scene. "Lady, don't you know it is against the law to leave the scene of an acci- dent?" "Officer, I wasn't in an accident." "Hm, how do you explain the fresh damage on your car?" "An elephant sat on it." "Lady, would you please blow into this little balloon?" For those of you who heard about the Vagabonds' trip to Florida that seemed to have been planned by Murphy and his Law, it is a pleasure to report that everyone has recovered or is on the mend. I got mail from a relative down there that I was to have contacted (but didn't), and she was home after a week in the hospital climaxing a two-month battle with the bug. Another friend re ported her trip to Portugal had been similarly affected. Sc it was universal, folks. No one seems to have come up with a reason for this epidemic. By JUDY VAN DEEN Today writer "T here wasn't a single man who could come between me and my horses, until I met my husband," declared Karen Parrish, her eyes sparkling. "Horses were my life." TIJ.is vibrant, soft spoken Australian la dy's romance with horses started when she was only 4 years old, in Southern Aus tralia, where she was born. It was a rom ance that led her to become a champion horse woman. Sitting in her living room, in Navy housing near the Seaplane Base, she told of how it all began. "We lived across the street from racing stables. The trainers would allow me to sit on the horses and lead me around. Then, when I was around 7, we moved to the Outback where I had a Shetland pony to ride," she recalled. Her description of life in the Outback immediately brings to life the vivid de scription in Colleen McCullough's book The Thorn Birds. There was a one-room school where grades one through seven were taught, a police station and a hotel that her parents owned. "We spent a year and a half in this incredible place, a barren desert. There was no TV, very little contact with the outside world. People lived on cattle sta tions whose boundaries were l 00-200 miles from each other. The stations are large because of the lack of pasturage," she explained. Her family's next move was to Mel- bourne where she lived until she married. Within two weeks of the family move, Par rish had talked her parents into buying her a horse. She had been bitten by the horse bug. "Cracker was just an ordinary, run-of the-mill horse, but he was mine. I was the only one he liked - he was pretty crafty and he could be mean," she said. "I joined the local Pony Club and spent every week end at the club taking care of my horse, who was stabled there. Once a month we would have a rally day, with special in struct ion on riding and horse care. I loved the social aspects of the group and stayed with it until I was 13." Here she got her basic education in the care and training of horses - learning how to groom and muck out the stalls. During this time she bought and sold four or five horses. "When I was 13 I bought my first Thor oughbred race horse. She was only 6 months old and I named her Emma. I did all the training and handling. Eventually I began to show and breed her. We were friends," she explained. "If I was upset, I would talk to Emma for comfort." With eyes puddling up, she described a night when Emma's second foal was born. "I couldn't sleep. I tossed and turned. Fi nally I decided I had to go to the s,able.;...:, I was leaving the house, the phone rang to tell me she was in iauor. When I reached the stable, her foal was just starting to stand on its wobbly legs," she explained. "What a thrill." As a young woman in her 20s she dis covered the Australian Pony, bred from a Welsh Pony. She bought a stallion, "Yar rayong Posh," who became a champion at local shows and was first-place winner in the Royal Show. "Posh" was a three-time winner. His banners are all around the living room of her home. "When I first got him, he wasn't even hip high. When he was an adult, he was 48 inches high. Only children can ride them. The maximum height of these horses is 14 hands, or 56 inches." She put her heart and soul into horses. She once rode the Australian horse of the year in competition. There is a picture of her riding a horse on the coffee table. "TIJ.is is the first Thoroughbred I ever saw race that I wanted to lose. I was praying that he would lose. I was overjoyed when he came in second from the last. I wanted Placido for show," she explained. After the race she sought out the trainer and learned the name of the owners. It took her six months of talking to get them to sell. He did much better as a show horse. "Each time I acquired a horse, I did better and better as I learned how to choose. You know the bottom line is that it costs as much to work with a bad horse as a good one." Parrish became a beautician and opened her own salon in Melbourne. "I was fright fllll)' busy, juggling my business and my horses. I had four horses in training and was up early to care for the horses, then put in a full day at the salon and then back with the horses. l had no time for a social life." And then one day some friends intro- duced her to the man she was to marry. It was love at first sight. He was in the U.S. Navy, in Australia on leave. "We met in November and were mar ried in Honolulu in March of 1987. I al ways knew I would marry an American," she said, smiling. "I sold all the horses but one, which is leased to friends for breed ing, and came to America. " Although she enjoys Whidbey Island, because it is so similar to Melbourne, she is looking forward to her husband's retire ment in 1992 and the family's return to Australia to live, she said. Parrish is the mother of a 20-month-old daughter and a 12-year-old stepson. She has resisted acquiring any animals while here, because of the expense of transporting them back to Australia, but more important because of the long quar antine imposed by the Australian govern ment. "I was completely out of horses until I met Amoy and George Morse, who have a Pony Club nearby. They gave me the op portunity to instruct again, and I love it." Parrish doesn' t know how the horse bug bit her because there is no one in the family who has the virus, but she is glad it did. To parents of young girls who are begging for a horse, she suggests they lease a horse before buying to see if the young one is ready for the commitment. In the Meat and Potatoes reci pe, the suet is beef fat that can be supplied by your butcher. On ly 1/4 cup is required. Thpp says the suet is what gives the dish its flavor. We are reminded of a dear friend who raised her four chil dren (and her husband) on a fam ily recipe she called "Meat and Beans." They all seemed to like it, and it supplied all the protein they needed. Meat and Beans became the staple for the family over a 20-year period. One day my friend realized she hadn't made the family 's special dish for some time, so she served it that night. Her husband looked at the bubbling concoction for a minute then said, with a sigh, "You know, I never did care much for Meat and Beans!" *** MEAT AND POTATOES 1 lb. hamburger 1/4 cup diced suet (ask a butcher for this) 4 large potatoes salt and pepper Fry suet until melted, then add 1/2 of hamburger and brown. Place on a greased and floured baking sheet and brush top with water. Dust lightly with cinnamon. Bake about 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Serve hot or cold. to column Joyce Kieviec of Oak Harbor sent in a recipe from Aunt Reka Haga 's favorite collection. She says it may appear more compli cated and time consuming th,ui it is, but you sure get a lot of rolls from one package of yeast. Your early morning guests will be im pressed with these rolls hot out of the oven. OVERNIGHT CINNAMON ROLLS 4 cups water 2/3 cup sugar 1 Tbs. salt Boil five minutes then add 1 cup shortening. Cool to luke warm. Dissolve 1 pkg. yeast in 1/2 cup warm water. Beat 4 eggs and add to liquid, then add yeast. Add 12-16 cups flour and knead down. Let it rise in a greased bowl for two hours, then punch dough down and let rise again for 2 hours. Punch down and let rise again. Roll out on floured board, spread with melted butter, cinna mon and sugar and raisins. Roll up and cut into slices. Place on cookie sheet or in pan and let set in a cool place overnight. In the morning bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. When slightly cool, you may give them a powdered sugar glaze. *** Thank you for the recipes. With spring coming, rhubarb be comes a favorite dessert-maker. He 9 finished in a tie for second place in the jockey standings and becomes the first rider in the track's history to have his mounts earn over $1 million. Not bad considering Olguin arrived a week late and lost his ap prentice weight allowance early in the meeting. It didn't take Vancouver trainers long to discover that Olguin was blessed with talent. The 5-foot-6, 114-pound jockey was adept at hus tling his mounts out of the starting gate and securing position into the first turn, a must on Exhibition Park's smaller five-eights oval. Others may have remembered 01- guin 's father, Rogelio, who enjoyed 9 success in Vancouver from 1970 to 1972, and might have figured Gerry was blessed with good bloodlines. Now, however, after some prod ding from veteran jockey agent Pat McDowell, Olguin is ready to try his luck at Longacres. "My goal eventually is to ride in California, and I think people notice riders from Longacres more than ones from Canada," Olguin said. Olguin broke his maiden in Janua ry 1938 at Agua Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico. The filly was named, ap propriately enough, Light the Tote, which is something Olguin hopes to } TOI),\ Y. Sun020 3.
