Postcard depicting a woodcut of a house with a Confederate flag, women on the front porch, and soldiers marching in the street. The description on the verso reads, ‘Caroline Lowe House – by Mario Sanchez 1963 – Painted Woodcarving. Duval Street at Caroline, Key West, Florida. (Now site of Gulf Life Ins. Co.) Local history tells of Caroline Lowe, Confederate beauty, who would fly the Stars and Bars from the widow’s walk atop the dwelling whenever Union troops marched by. But when a searching party entered and looked for the flag, it was nowhere to be seen. Caroline wore hoops, but the house also had newel posts that could have concealed the flag.’Collection
