Description

Postcard depicting a woodcut of a house with a Confederate flag, women on the front porch, and soldiers marching in the street. The description on the verso reads, ‘Caroline Lowe House – by Mario Sanchez 1963 – Painted Woodcarving. Duval Street at Caroline, Key West, Florida. (Now site of Gulf Life Ins. Co.) Local history tells of Caroline Lowe, Confederate beauty, who would fly the Stars and Bars from the widow’s walk atop the dwelling whenever Union troops marched by. But when a searching party entered and looked for the flag, it was nowhere to be seen. Caroline wore hoops, but the house also had newel posts that could have concealed the flag. Collection “El Kiosko”, Key West, Florida.’ The message on the verso reads, ‘Same Card, 2, Flora is arriving (Friday or Saturday). Mother has (late this afternoon) arrived here looking exhausted. She says she won’t be a grist mill between C and I. I don’t know, work tired and wanting to do a good job here, but not knowing where things stand. I love you and was so happy to have here with me - wasn’t it fun. The heck to the tropics. Oh, so good, J’. The card is addressed to Mr. O.A. Poirier, Fox Run Road, Norwalk, Connecticut, and is postmarked Key West.
