Description

Postcard depicting a Mario Sanchez woodcarving of children playing on a street in front of houses and a church. The description on the verso reads, 'Mario Sanchez. "Chicken Alley" - 1962 - Painted Woodcarving. In early times in Key West, children played their games in the streets. Seen here on Bahama Street (between Fleming and Eaton and parallel to Duval and Simonton Streets) are top spinning, kite flying, rope skipping and marble playing. Built directly on the street were the cigar-maker's cottages and the Social Hall of St. Paul's Episcopal Church (right background). Trees are (left) Royal Poinciana, (center) Jacaranda, and coconut palms. Lane at far right was called "Chicken Alley". Collection "El Kiosko", Key West, Florida.'
