These khaki wool uniform trousers are part of a uniform set formerly belonging to Ernest Hemingway and were worn during his service as a Red Cross ambulance driver on the Italian Front during World War I. The trousers are stained with Hemingway's blood from the injuries he sustained when he was struck by an Austrian mortar shell in Italy on July 8, 1918.
The trousers are calf-length with full, ballooned hips that taper to a fitted lower leg. They feature a button-fly front and a side pocket. The bloodstains are concentrated on the upper portion of the garment.
