Mixing bowl . Whenever the Athearns slaughtered a pig, Mabel made hogs head cheese. First she carefully cleaned the head, then boiled it for many hours until the meat fell off the bones. She stained the broth and saved it. Then picked all the meat off the bones. This was ground and mixed with salt, pepper and sage and packed into this bowl. She poured broth over it, then weighted the top with a plate and a brick, and put it in a cool place. After it 'set' the head cheese would be unmolded. Sliced it was used in sandwiches like cold cuts.Update Date
