Description

Inventor John Bean (1821-1909) and his son-in-law Dr. Robert P. Gober (1859-1943) built this house on the corner of North Santa Cruz and Bean Avenues in 1889. All the rooms and fixtures on the north side were duplicated on the south side to accommodate the two families. Family members are shown here on the porch and in the yard. Dr. Gober had a speaking tube installed beside his bed so that he could talk to patients who knocked on his door at night. The house was demolished in 1938 to make way for the expanding business district. Stan Chinchen, who owns the original of this photograph, is a great-great-grandson of John Bean.
