CUR041Description
This photo of Paul E. Curtis, Sr., appeared in the San Jose News on December 29, 1953 when he announced that the First National Bank of Los Gatos, an independent bank located at 160 West Main Street, had been sold to the American Trust Company. Curtis was president of the bank and he announced his retirement at that time. A staff of about 20 people retained their positions. James K. Lochead was the president of American Trust. The old Los Gatos bank had a long history of serving the town. S. D. Balch, who died in Los Gatos on October 26, 1953, purchased the controlling interest in the bank in 1939. He had been a Los Gatos banker since 1904, when he and J. A. Case brought the controlling interest in the Bank of Los Gatos, incorporated in 1883 by William Conklin and a Mr. Kirkland.
