FAR049Description
By the 1930s, automobiles were beginning to have a negative effect on the Southern Pacific Railroad's passenger and freight business, and a proposed "great dam" that would submerge the towns of Lexington and Alma started to be mentioned in the newspaper. The Lexington Dam project was completed in 1952, and soon the freeway would replace the beautiful shaded creek that meandered under the Main Street Bridge. Memorial Park, which once offered picnic grounds, an outdoor dance pavilion, the municipal plunge, and a gracious spot of holiday celebrations, was gone by 1954. In this photograph, Los Gatos Creek is confined to the concrete channel on the left, removed from its original location adjacent to Forbes Mill. The remains of the old mill can be seen at right, 25 feet from the freeway. FAR049Collection
