Description

Lyndon Farwell, right, president of the Los Gatos Telephone Company, is shown holding an issue of the Los Gatos Daily Times dated July 31, 1952. The article with the headline which reads "Extended Phone Service Change Set" refers to the fact that at midnight on August 1, 1952, the 4,437 telephone subscribers in Los Gatos would be able to place calls to any of the 68,000 telephones in Campbell, Saratoga and San Jose, toll free. Instead of the usual practice of contacting one of the 17 operators employed by the Los Gatos Telephone Company to place their calls, subscribers would now dial the numbers themselves. One AT&T engineer predicted that by 1962, one should be able to dial any long-distance phone number in North America. FAR058
