Description

James Alexander Forbes was born in Inverness, Scotland on January 6, 1805, and he died in California on May 6, 1881. He arrived in Yerba Buena (San Francisco) California circa 1831, seeking his fortune. Fluent in Spanish, he married a member of the prominent Galindo family. Even though he had completed building the mill in 1854, with sandstone hauled from the creek banks and hills, the machinery for the mill did not arrive from New York until 1855, and then proved difficult to install. This series of events eventually resulted in his bankruptcy. MUS018a
