Name/Title

1922 Cat statues at estate entrance

Entry/Object ID

CTS 006

Description

Sculpted in 1922 by Robert Treat Paine, the cats are known today as symbols of the town. The cats were commissioned by Colonel Charles Erskine Scott Wood and his consort Sara Bard Field to stand guard at the entrance to their estate, primarily to demonstrate the value of public art. Colonel Wood considered them "a sort of missionary work in culture in California," and he refused to move them off the public road, even when they were vandalized on several occasions. CTS006
