1954 Demolition of Carnegie Library

Description

The Carnegie library closed on August 15, 1954. The foreman of the wrecking crew, Herb Weitzel, was interviewed by the Times-Observer on Oct. 29, 1954. He found the building was in very poor shape. When a one-inch wire cable that had apparently been wrapped around the building after the 1906 earthquake was cut, the walls pulled away from the ceiling rafters and visibly sagged. The mortar had become fine dust. When demolition was complete, the land was sold to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and is still used as the church parking lot in 2009. LGL012
