Extraordinary Lives. Pictured at left is Sara Bard Field (1882 - 1974), who in 1915 crossed the country in an Overland automobile, an unheard-of adventure, to deliver almost a half million signatures in support of women's suffrage to President Woodrow Wilson. The trip took 88 days over mostly unmarked, unpaved roads. In this ca. 1925 photo, she stands arm-in-arm with her future husband, C.E.S. Wood. At the center of the photo is Henry Meade Bland (1863 - 1931) poet laureate of California (1929 - 1931), who grew up on a small farm in north Los Gatos. Dr. Bland served as the first principal at Los Gatos High School when it was located at the University Avenue Central School and later he taught at San Jose Normal School. Second from right is legendary tennis champion Helen Wills Moody (1905 - 1998), winner of two Olympic gold medals. Senator James Duval Phelan (1861 - 1930) sits at far right, three-time mayor of San Francisco and builder of nearby Villa Montalvo. PE072Collection
