RES256Description
Craftsman style built in 1896. The land was bought from the McCullough family in 1899 by Mr. Sawyer, an architect for the city of San Francisco. It was a honeymoon house at first and then a summer and vacation home. Several owners occupied the house from 1907, when the Sawyers sold it, until 1947 when the Avillas moved in. Subsequently, an Avilla daughter and her husband acquired the home in 1973. The house suffered significant damage in the 1906 earthquake, but that damage has been repaired. There are several sayings carved into beams in the living room, apparently after the earthquake, and a very old avocado tree in the back yard. This house earned a Bellringer award in 1976.
