Description

This plaque is dedicated to Lucius E. Cochran with the caption "Born at Sunbury, Delaware County, Ohio, June 12, 1841 ~ Engaged in Blast-Furnace, Rolling Mill and Steel Industry. Also deeply interested in agriculture. Died at Cairo, Egypt, April 12, 1913." According to the "20th Century History of Youngstown and Mahoning County, Ohio," the Cochran family is originally from Youngstown, Ohio. Lucius's father, Robert, worked in agriculture for most of his life. Both of his parents were heavily involved in their church. As a young man, Lucius moved to Pittsburg to work as a clerk in a general store. In 1862, he got a job with the Andrews & Hitchcock firm, where he stayed for five years. He then started his own business and became a member of the mercantile firm of Andrews Brothers & Company. That firm eventually merged with the Niles Iron Company with Lucius as president and treasurer. In addition to this, he held numerous positions at various metalworking/iron foundries across Youngstown, including the Youngstown Iron and Steel Roofing Company, the Ohio Steel Company, and the Mahoning Ore Company. In 1868, he married Mary Isabella Brownlee, with whom he had two sons, Robert B. and Chauncy A. Cochran.
