1995.1.20Description
This item includes 11 photographs depicting the different stages of the McKinley National Memorial construction from March through October of 1916.
The architects for the project were McKim, Mead, and White, and the construction firm was the John H. Parker Company, both of New York. The Niles Firebrick Company also did bricklaying.
Each of the 28 solid Georgian marble columns was 30 feet high and weighed several tons. They were transported to Ohio by train and hauled uphill to the site by horse and wagon. Special derricks, two steam-powered cranes, and gangs of workmen were required to erect each column. The final column was set into place on October 3, 1916.Acquisition
